THE SOUTHERN AFRICAN ENERGY EFFICIENCY CONVENTION (SAEEC2010)

Since the beginning of 2008, all South Africans have experienced the disruptive effects of load shedding. It has not only impacted negatively on our businesses, but also in our private lives. It has become evident to all South Africans that the country does not have sufficient power generation capacity to meet its needs.

Plans are in place to bring in new generation capacity, but will not be sufficient to alleviate the pressure on the national grid in the short term. An immediate solution is however needed to meet the challenge within the national electrical capacity and energy constraints.

The ability lies with the consumers of electricity to increase the reserve margin on the grid through energy efficiency to cater for planned and unplanned events on the grid, economic growth and the accommodation of new loads and expansions. Everybody needs to become more efficient, in their businesses and in their homes.

The rising cost of electricity, as well as the incentives and penalties associated with the Power Conservation Programme will be a major driving force for energy efficiency on a National scale. Our approach towards energy will determine our ability of be competitive in our various industries.

The above will also help South Africa in achieving international competitiveness and meet the various energy use and demand reduction targets set out by the Department of Minerals and Energy (DME) and the National Energy Regulator of South Africa.

It is thus critical that all sectors of our economy become active in the management of energy as a resource that must and can be managed to the benefit of their bottom-line. This goes hand-in-hand with an increase in knowledge of energy, how it is consumed and how it can be utilized more efficiently.

The Southern African Association for Energy Efficiency (SAEE) aims to become the Association in Southern Africa that brings all energy stakeholders in the region together. The SAEE has enjoyed tremendous success towards achieving its goals in consolidating energy efficiency stakeholders in the Southern African region. The SAEE has members from nine countries. These countries are Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Zambia; Mozambique and South Africa.

In order to achieve this synergy, the SAEE is hosting the 5th Southern African Energy Efficiency Convention (SAEEC2010) as an event serving the energy management-, environmental-, facilities building upgrades-, energy engineering-, cogeneration-, power generation-, and efficiency improvement industries. The SAEEC2010 is an important energy event of national scope for end-users and energy professional in all areas of the energy field.
